Schauspielhaus Zürich

Repertoire 1938 - 1969

The Schauspielhaus Zürich denotes culturally significant history between 1938 and 1968. During this period, it was shaped by the artistic direction of Oskar Wälterlin, who not only served as the theater director from 1938 until his passing in 1961 but also directed numerous influential plays. The house's success is in parts attributed to its collaboration with Teo Otto, a stage designer who contributed to a total of over 800 plays during his career, solidifying his position as one of the most influential artists in his field during the 20th century. One play that holds a special place in the Schauspielhaus Zürich's repertoire is the Swiss drama"Wilhelm Tell" by Friedrich Schiller, which premiered every two years on average. In addition to its Swiss classics, the Schauspielhaus also frequently showed works of William Shakespeare and cherished the tradition of a New Year's Eve premiere.
